Travel to Marrakech: plan your trip the right way

Three flight hours from France and with almost no time difference, Marrakech remains the easiest sunshine destination for a long weekend. Medina, gardens, souks, the Agafay desert and the High Atlas combine easily into four or five days.

    When to visit Marrakech

March to May and October-November are the best windows: 22-28 °C, mild evenings and comfortable Atlas excursions. December-January stay pleasant by day (18-20 °C) but nights drop near 5 °C — check that your riad is heated.

July and August regularly exceed 40 °C, which limits sightseeing to the morning. The cheapest flights appear in January, February and June, outside school holidays and Eid week.

Riad in the medina or hotel in Guéliz?

A riad in the medina offers a patio, roof terrace and Moroccan breakfast for €40-90 a night for two: the most authentic option, if you accept narrow lanes and walking in with luggage.

Guéliz and Hivernage hold international hotels, apartments with pools and restaurants: more practical with children, quieter, close to taxis.

For a relaxing stay, a guesthouse near the Palmeraie with a pool offers the best value, 15 minutes by taxi from the centre.

Transport: airport, taxis and day trips

Marrakech-Menara airport (RAK) is 6 km from the centre: a 15-minute ride, about 100-150 dirhams (€10-15) by taxi. Agree a fixed price with your accommodation before arrival.

In town, petit taxis run on the meter — insist on it; a ride inside the walls rarely exceeds 30-40 dirhams. Bus 19 links the airport to Jemaa el-Fna.

For the Atlas (Ourika valley, Ouzoud falls) or the Agafay desert, a full-day trip costs €25-45 per person, transport included.

What to do in 4 days

Day 1: medina, Jemaa el-Fna at dusk, souks and Ben Youssef madrasa. Day 2: Majorelle Garden, Yves Saint Laurent Museum, Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs.

Day 3: Atlas or Agafay excursion with a Berber lunch. Day 4: traditional hammam, Menara gardens and an afternoon by the pool.

Two useful habits: agree the price before any purchase or service, and politely decline spontaneous 'guides' in the souks.

    Budget for a Marrakech weekend

Expect €300-500 per person for 4 days:

    - Return flight: €80-180 depending on departure city and season. - Riad or hotel: €20-45/night/person in a double room. - Meals: €3-6 for a tagine in the medina, €12-25 in a Guéliz restaurant. - Day trip: €25-45. - Hammam and extras: €15-40.
