Lisbon has everything a city break needs: short cheap flights, mild weather all year, walkable districts, terraces overlooking the Tagus and a World Heritage day trip 40 minutes away by train. Here is how to plan three to five days without price surprises.
April to June and September-October combine 22-27 °C, little rain and still-reasonable prices. November to February bring the cheapest flights (sometimes €50-70 return from Paris) with 15-17 °C by day and showers.
Avoid the first half of June (Lisbon festivals, hotels full) and August, hotter and pricier. Book 4 to 8 weeks ahead; departures from Paris-Beauvais, Lyon, Marseille and Toulouse are often the most competitive.
Baixa-Chiado is the most practical: flat, central, on the metro and walking distance from the main sights.
Alfama charms with its lanes and fado houses, but steep streets and suitcases do not mix.
Bairro Alto / Príncipe Real suit nights out, with the weekend noise that comes with them.
Belém and Alcântara are quieter and cheaper, 15-20 minutes by tram from the centre. Expect €70-120 a night for a central 3-star, €45-80 slightly out of the centre.
Humberto Delgado airport is 7 km from the centre. The red metro line reaches Baixa in 25 minutes with one change (about €1.80); a taxi or ride-hailing costs €12-18.
In town, the rechargeable Viva Viagem card covers metro, bus, trams and funiculars. Tram 28 is picturesque but packed: board early in the morning at the Martim Moniz terminus.
Sintra is 40 minutes from Rossio station (€2.60 one way): leave before 8.30am to see Pena Palace without the crowds. Cascais takes 35 minutes from Cais do Sodré.
Day 1: Baixa, Praça do Comércio, Chiado, Santa Justa lift, then sunset from an Alfama viewpoint. Day 2: Belém — Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower, pastéis de nata — then LX Factory late in the day.
Day 3: Sintra day trip (Pena and Quinta da Regaleira) or an Alfama-fado day with lunch at the Ribeira Market.
With two extra days, add Cascais, Carcavelos beach or a Tagus boat trip.
A long weekend runs €300-480 per person:
- Return flight: €60-160 depending on season. - Hotel: €35-60/night/person in a central double. - Meals: €3-5 coffee and pastry, €10-15 daily special, €20-35 dinner with wine. - Transport: €6-8/day, Sintra train €5.20 return. - Sights: €10-20 for the main entries.
3 days for the city, 4 to 5 if you add Sintra and Cascais at a relaxed pace.
Yes for food and transport. City-centre accommodation, however, is now close to Western European high-season prices.
No for the city: parking is hard and public transport is enough. A one- or two-day rental makes sense for the Alentejo coast or western Sintra.
January, February and November show the lowest fares, often 40% below summer prices.
